One Square Mile of Heaven - Pawleys Island South Carolina
Pawleys Island, known, as "Arrogantly Shabby" was the historical retreat for 18th Century Rice Planters, Today it retains its original character, due to the original and some still standing beach homes.
These early beach homes were built of Cypress, they have survived the onslaught of wind, rain, humidity, termites and hurricanes. It is truly a special place.
Carefree living is the order of the day at Pawleys, crabbing in the creeks; surfcasting and just lounging on the beach is what it's all about. Of course there is the local legend of ghosts and in this instance the "Gray Man" when spotted before a storm will preserve the home of the one who sees him. This has proven true in several hurricanes and has been documented on Unsolved Mysteries, it is a special Halloween presentation of theirs every year and you'll see one of our most famous locals on the show. Many of the residents today are decedents of the original families who came to the area.
Pawleys Island is nothing if not picturesque and draws a lot of artists to paint the scenery. You may at anytime see one of the popular local art teachers, Bruce Chandler with her students dunking their watercolor paper in the surf to give it more "character". Low Country watercolor art is in big demand and a painting of Pawleys Island Chapel can be a treasure you'll cherish long after you've gone home.
The Seaview Inn has been a treasure since 1937 and home to artist workshops as well as other guests throughout the year. Just 20 rooms will give you the taste of yesteryear, reading good books, hanging out in a Pawleys Island Hammock or just sitting in the rocking chairs on the porch just watching the weather and don't forget the wonderful Low Country Cooking that goes along with your stay.
Crossing the Causeway back to Pawleys proper you'll find the Pawleys Island Hammock Shops, a Mecca for tourists since 1938, these shops were originally started by the Lachicotte family who have been in the area since the 1850s. Don't miss the Hammock Weaver's Pavilion where You'll be able to watch the "Original Pawleys Island Hammock" being woven out of cotton rope, the way it has been since it's organ in the late 1800s.
Also on the mainland you'll find one of the oldest churches in the country, All Saints Episcopal Church, located on the Old King's Hwy just behind Route 17. The original building is still standing since 1739; the cemetery is of more recent origin, started in 1820 and home to "Alice's Grave", another local ghost highlight.
And now, Pawleys Island has become a haven for golfers! Former rice plantations have evolved into some of the most scenic and playable golf courses in the Myrtle Beach area. Caledonia leads the list with old rice fields in the distance. Caledonia is ranked in Golf Magazine's "Top 100 You Can Play" and Golf Digest considers it one of "America's 100 Greatest Public Courses". Pawleys Plantation and True Blue are also top-notch courses.
Pawleys Island and its people are just down-to-earth and downright friendly!
